How the dates are worked out

First charge = start date + trial length (days)
Safe cancel date = first charge − 2 days

We suggest cancelling two days early because many services end trials at a set hour in their own time zone, which can fall the day before in yours. The "if you forget" table counts every charge from the first one onward: a monthly plan forgotten for a year is 12 charges.

Questions and answers

When does a free trial start charging?

Most trials convert to a paid plan when the trial period ends, so a 30-day trial started on the 1st usually charges on the 31st. Some services charge at a specific hour, which can land a day earlier in your time zone, so cancel at least a day or two ahead.

Will I lose access if I cancel a free trial early?

It depends on the service. Many let you keep access until the trial would have ended; some end it immediately. The cancellation screen or help page usually says which.

How do I avoid being charged after a free trial?

Set a reminder for a couple of days before the first charge date (the calculator gives you one), or cancel right after signing up if the service keeps your access until the trial ends. Using a virtual card with a spending limit is another option some banks offer.
